- Research: Aldi is the new German advertising darling
Since 2020, APG, BBDO, Deloitte and Yougov have been conducting a long-term study exclusively for HORIZONT Online to collect the advertising favorites of Germans i.e. the brands that have become firmly established in people's minds in the long term due to their positively perceived advertising. In the last quarter of the past year, Aldi was able to take first place thanks to its Christmas campaign and is now enthroned at the top together with long-term leader Haribo. Deutsche Telekom ranked bronze. The best of the Christmas campaigns, however, is that of Aldi, whose storytelling is perhaps not quite as sophisticated, but has a feel-good character more than all the others. In the spot, people conjure up very different Christmas surprises from Aldi bags for others. The discounter's message: "Whatever you do, make it your party." With this approach, Aldi, together with Antoni 99, triggers joy in 56 percent of those surveyed and thus more than with any other advertising darling. In fact, no other Christmas film was mentioned as often as Aldi's. - Serbia: Lidl a leader in green energy
Discount Retail Chain Lidl Serbia (owned by the German Schwarz Group) opened its first store in Serbia a little over 4 years ago. It was big news. People were looking forward to new brands and lower prices. Those who know Lidl were not surprised by the general "craze" for this discount trade chain, but were surprised by the company's attitude towards the country in which it operates. Lidl not only has a high level of awareness about environmental protection, but has devoted itself to it in a very serious, seemingly priority way. The investments and efforts that this company directs in developing economic awareness and environmental protection are commendable. Lidl had numerous projects on educating citizens about the importance of the topic and actively participated in cleaning various cities in Serbia. They have installed recycling machines in their stores, so those who recycle not only participate in environmental protection, but also help the Be Humane foundation, by paying 5 dinars for each recycled bottle or can, Lidl pays for the treatment of children. In addition to environmental activities, Lidl has shown that it also cares about people with disabilities. The action of marking the cars that proud drivers park in places marked for disabled people has received a lot of support from the people of Novi Sad. The latest news shows that this approach to business is Lidl's long-term goal. Namely, this company annually saves 6,850 MWh of energy in Serbia, which is equal to the annual consumption of about 1,000 households. In addition, Lidl is the only retail chain that is fully supplied with green energy. Sounds pretty amazing? How did they do it? Since the very arrival of Lidl in Serbia, the construction of stores has been approached with the thought of a sustainable future, and all Lidl stores have energy-saving LED bulbs, sensors that control the lighting of the space, as well as cooling devices of the latest technology with optimized defrosting. Thanks to these measures, on average, Lidl facilities (stores and logistics centers) use 30% less energy compared to facilities of similar size and purpose. This was confirmed by the EDGE certificates that 53 Lidl stores have received so far, as well as the logistics center in Nova Pazova. Certification of newer stores is ongoing. The logistics center in Nova Pazova, as well as the administration building of Lidl, have LEED certificates, which show that the company was guided by the principles of sustainability and energy saving during construction, so specifically the logistics center saves 38% of energy, while the administration building saves even more than 50% of energy in compared to comparative objects. At the recently opened Lidl logistics center in Lapovo, solar panels have been installed that can independently produce energy and cover about a third of the center's operating needs. The logistics center in Lapovo received the highest level of LEED certification, platinum - one of 13 in the whole world. The energy savings at this Logistics Center compared to reference facilities according to the LEED standard is 45%. ´Sustainability and care for the environment are one of the most important topics in Lidl Serbia's business, which is why energy efficiency has always been an indispensable dimension of our business. Thanks to the signing of the "ZelEPS" contract with the Electric Power Company of Serbia, we are the only retail chain that is completely supplied with green energy, i.e. energy from renewable sources, which we are particularly proud of´ said Ana Petrović, director of the Central Services Directorate at Lidl Serbia. Another confirmation of Lidl's success in the field of daily energy use is the ISO 50001 certificate awarded by the DEKRA organization, which entails the establishment and management of a system of energy consumption, energy sources and further strengthening of business through the improvement of energy efficiency in all domains of activity. Taking all this into account, Lidl becomes a true economic leader in the field of energy saving and environmental protection in Serbia. Environmental care is the inevitable future, and Lidl has already paved the way there. We hope that other companies in Serbia will follow this path. - Italy: Action Italy reveals strategies and development plans
Discount Non-food Retail Chain Action Italy's (owned by UK PE investor 3i Group) expansion projects for 2023 are big. The chain, born 30 years ago in the Netherlands, announces strategies for growth in Italy. For 2023, Action intends to double the number of openings compared to last year. The brand, which entered our country in 2021, but was born 30 years ago with the first store in Enkhuizen, the Netherlands, is active on the national territory with 28 structures of which 21 were built only in 2022. The stores are distributed between Lombardy (16), Piedmont (9) and Veneto (3), the last region in order of time in which Action entered last July. In 2023 Action will aim to further cover Northern Italy and expand towards the central regions, doubling its size. The presence of Action in the world Today the non-food discount store operates in 10 European countries, including Italy and employs over 65,000 people of more than 124 different nationalities. It offers an assortment of around 6,000 ever-changing products to over 12 million customers in more than 2,133 stores in Europe and to another eight million users on the action.com website every week. The strategy for success The chain's business model is based on a few assets: constant improvement, elimination of unnecessary costs and efficient management with a focus on simplicity and standardization of processes. The points of sale of the sign are often located far from the main streets but easy to find. Also important is the strategy of affordable prices, guaranteed by an assortment divided into 14 product categories designed on the needs of consumers but with a limited number of items. Action focuses only on the products that are purchased most frequently. A choice that limits the unsold and translates into a greater density of sales. In each country the assortment is almost identical. "Offering to the customer is at the heart of everything Action does. As a non-food discounter we must stick to our formula and never forget to put the customer first, making sure that he keeps coming back", explains Philippe Levisse, general manager of Action in Italy. People add value to our brand; our employees are the backbone of Action. We are a discount but we never discount people. We make sure they feel good working with what we call 'the complete Action package': from pay to growth opportunities, from being able to work time to creating a good work-life balance." Sustainability Among the objectives of the group there is also a strategy that looks at the well-being of nature. The general manager adds: "Sustainable sourcing and production are essential for the future and responsible growth of Action. We have the size and location to provide our customers with good quality, sustainable products at the lowest price. As a leading retailer in the discount industry, we consider it our responsibility to work continuously to improve our products, our supply chain and to reduce CO2 emissions. This is the goal we continue to pursue." - Germany: Aldi Süd rolls out self-checkouts from Diebold Nixdorf
Discount Retail Chain Aldi Süd is remodelling its checkout zone. On one hand, the discounter is equipping selected stores in Germany with self-checkouts from Diebold Nixdorf. On the other hand, all German Aldi Süd stores will receive at least one double checkout at which two customers can be served simultaneously by one employee. The rollout will start in the first quarter of this year. After an extensive test phase, Aldi decided in favour of the terminals from Diebold Nixdorf. Starting in 2021, Aldi Süd tested the self-checkouts in individual German stores and most recently in 30 locations. The discounter also has self-checkout terminals from Diebold Nixdorf in live operation in the UK, Switzerland, Australia and the USA. In Germany, Aldi Süd is now introducing self-checkouts from the EASY series in selected stores in urban areas as a supplement to the attended checkout. The self-checkouts run with Diebold Nixdorf’s modular software. This is integrated into the discounter’s existing checkout software architecture developed by Gebit. Customers can pay for their goods at the terminals exclusively without cash using an EC or debit card. An integrated control scale in the self-checkout terminal protects items against shrinkage. Aldi Süd also relies on self-checkouts abroad In the UK, Switzerland, Australia and the USA, the discounter is pursuing a similar rollout strategy as in Germany: first, the retailer sent the self-checkouts on trial in selected pilot stores in the target countries and then slowly expanded their use. In the rollout of the self-checkout terminals in Germany, the retailer is focusing on locations around schools or office buildings where many small purchases are made. “Self-checkout terminals are ideal here to ease potential queues in the checkout area,” said André Giesen, Director National Store Operations at Aldi Süd in a press release. Faster checkout process, more time for packing But there are other changes in the checkout zone at Aldi Süd: the discounter will gradually equip its shops with at least one double checkout. This will allow one employee to serve two customers at the same time. These checkouts will be extended and supplemented by a double goods shaft with two displays. Each double checkout will be equipped with two separate card terminals and receipt printers. While one customer puts items in the trolley or pays by card, the next customer’s purchase can already be scanned. The time of the Aldi checkout staff is optimally used and customers have more time to pack their goods.
