Germany: Netto tests app-based shopping trolley lock

Edeka Group-owned discounter Netto is testing Wanzl’s Hybridloc app-based shopping trolley system.

According to the manufacturer, it is the first system in the world that makes it possible to unlock the shopping trolley either as before with a coin as a deposit or through the retailer’s app. Shoppers who have downloaded the Netto app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store just need to activate the automated store locator in the settings in order to use the system. As soon as they hold their smartphone up to a shopping trolley, it is unlocked through NFC communication with the phone.

The Hybridloc electronic deposit lock is integrated into Wanzl’s EvoGrip handle system. The functions of the Hybridloc can be integrated into the respective retailer and store apps via Software Development Kit (SDK) and combined with additional features for the customer.
