Netherlands: Discount chain Action makes more than billion euros in profit

Updated: Mar 24, 2023

Discount Variety Retail Chain Action (owned by 3i Group) posted an operating profit (EBITDA) of €1.2 billion in 2022. This is 45% higher than in 2021. Turnover also rose sharply. At the beginning of this year, Action already reported that turnover was 30% higher last year and amounts to € 8.9 billion.

The discounter achieved this turnover through 2263 stores in ten countries. Of these, 407 are located in the Netherlands. The British parent company 3i Group does not provide figures on turnover and profit in the Dutch home market. In 2022, Action opened 280 new stores, including the first discount stores in Spain, making it the tenth European country in which the fast-growing discounter operates. The expansion continues this year, because earlier this month Action opened its first store in Slovakia, which is the eleventh country where the originally North Holland discount store is gaining a foothold. "The demand for discount is high everywhere," says CEO Hajir Hajji, who said in a statement that customers visit Action for daily products such as cleaning products, personal care items, toilet paper or sanitary towels, as well as for clothing or DIY items, for example. "In 2022, products that respond to high energy prices such as plaids and blankets and candles were particularly popular," says the CEO.
