Spain: Aldi avoids wasting 6,400 tons of food

Discount Retail Chain Aldi Spain (German family owned) has avoided the waste of more than 6,400 tons of perishable products during the last year thanks to the application of a 30% discount on certain items with a best before date or an upcoming expiration date.

With this measure, more than 3,620 tons of fresh meat and fish, about 1,130 tons of dairy products, more than 670 tons of fresh fruits and vegetables and about 910 tons of refrigerated food, among others, have been used from April 2022 to March 2023.

In this way, Aldi significantly reduces the volume of surplus products on its shelves and promotes the use of food with early shelf life.

The discounter carries out other initiatives that contribute to the reduction of food waste such as the development of improvements in logistics processes, the redesign of packaging to extend the shelf life of the product and the optimization of orders at points of sale, which aims to reduce waste with a daily inventory of products adapted to demand and consumer needs.
