Spain: Aldi keeps pace with Mercadona and lowers prices by 0.3% until September

Discount Retail Chain Aldi Spain is successfully implementing a formula to contain Mercadona and grow beyond the brick and mortar sector: price discounts.

The German chain has closed the year to September with a decrease of 0.3% compared to the same period last year – excluding fresh produce – precisely when prices in the sector as a whole have risen by 1.6%, according to data from Worldpanel by Numerator.

Mercadona, on the other hand, raised its prices by 2.6% until May 4, the date from which it began a general price drop of 0.5% until September 6, according to data from Algori. In the year to date, Mercadona's prices rose more than Aldi's, but the recent drop has been enough for the Valencian chain to recover part of the share lost in the first part of the year.

For its part, Aldi has always raised its prices below the sector average since August 2025, which explains the positive evolution of its stores on a comparable surface. So far in 2026, 65% of its supermarkets grew in sales, according to Algori.

Despite this, the aggressive pricing and opening policy comes at a cost: Aldi Spain is among the least profitable chains in our country. In the last financial year it obtained a profit of 496,437 euros, an operating margin of just 0.02%.
