UK: Discount market share 4 times higher than in 2011

Updated: Jun 21, 2023

Continuing discounter dominance and sales switching to private label are the headlines from the Kantar UK data for 12 w/e 14th May 2023, released this week:

Aldi's and Lidl's combined market share of 17.8% is a remarkable 4 times higher than it was back in 2011 (4.4%). And most of this share gain has come at the expense of the former “Top 4” whose combined share has fallen from 77.4% back in 2011 to 64.5% now. The chart below shows some dramatic share shifts over the past 12 years.

Own label sales continue to outpace the market, rising 15.2% compared to the same period last year, compared to branded sales increasing at 8.3%.

Right, now off to the PLMA Private Label Show in Amsterdam to see what great new product innovation is coming to the own label market, having spent a fantastic last two days sharing IPLC's insights into the potential for further Private Label growth across both Europe and Asia.
