Germany: Lidl launches Brand-New Payment method
Discount Retail Chain Lidl Germany recently added Wero as an additional payment option on lidl.de.
In online shopping, pricing and delivery times are not the only factors that matter—available payment methods can be equally decisive. Alongside established options like PayPal or credit cards, new alternatives are rapidly gaining traction. Among them is Wero, the European payment service already being adopted by major merchants. Now, customers can also complete their purchases using Wero on Lidl’s online store.
Wero highlights that this move makes Lidl the first food retailer in Germany to integrate Wero into its e-commerce platform.
To use the service, customers need a checking account with one of the 18 participating banks. Once activated within their primary banking app, Wero can be used seamlessly for purchases at Lidl.
How Payment via Wero Works
The checkout process remains straightforward. When shopping via smartphone, selecting Wero automatically redirects the customer to their bank's mobile app, where the payment is authorized within a secure, encrypted environment.
When ordering on a desktop computer or tablet, a QR code appears on the screen instead. Scanning the code with a smartphone transfers the funds directly from the customer’s bank account to Lidl. According to the retailer, payment confirmations are processed in just a few seconds.
Refunds for returned items follow the exact same path. Lidl states that returned funds are credited straight back to the original bank account used for the transaction.
Backed by a European Initiative
Wero was developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI)—an alliance of 18 leading European banks and payment service providers. The project aims to strengthen European sovereignty in digital payments and establish a viable alternative to global services like PayPal.
However, bank support alone is not enough to drive widespread adoption; merchant acceptance is equally crucial. By partnering with Lidl, the Wero network gains a major retail ally. Whether this integration will be enough to firmly establish Wero in consumers' daily shopping habits remains to be seen.
