Discount Retail Chain Lidl UK is set to introduce affordable mobile phone plans in several countries later this year, positioning itself as a new competitor to established telecom operators. The chain informed the Financial Times of its plans to expand beyond Germany, Austria, and Switzerland with a mobile service that could eventually be available in up to 30 countries, including the UK, US, France, and Spain. Lidl has not disclosed which markets it will prioritize initially.
Lidl joins a wave of new entrants into the European mobile market, alongside fintech companies like Revolut, Klarna, and N26. Last August, the FT reported that Monzo was also in the "early stages" of launching a similar service. These newcomers aim to offer affordable mobile services to enhance customer loyalty and diversify their revenue streams. Lidl will provide services via its Lidl Plus app, which boasts over 100 million users.
Julian Beer, a Lidl International executive, stated that the initiative would deliver "uncomplicated connectivity" to millions of customers. Lidl's owner, Schwarz Group, has partnered with mobile communications provider 1GLOBAL, enabling the retailer to become a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO). MVNOs, such as Tesco and Lebara in the UK, secure wholesale agreements to utilize the networks of major telecom groups, eliminating the need for their own infrastructure.
Kester Mann, an analyst at CCS Insight, noted that Lidl's entry into new markets would heighten competition for existing providers, who are already under pressure from financial services entrants like Revolut. As part of the agreement, Schwarz Group will acquire a 9.9 percent stake in 1GLOBAL, which holds telecom licenses and partnerships in 12 countries.
This mobile initiative represents the next phase in Schwarz's strategy to develop a comprehensive digital ecosystem alongside its 14,000 Lidl and Kaufland stores. Through its Schwarz Digits unit, the group has already emerged as a rapidly growing European provider of cloud computing and cybersecurity services, as well as an investor in artificial intelligence start-ups. Hakan Koç, founder and CEO of 1GLOBAL, expressed his company's goal to make mobile communications intuitive and flexible.
