USA: DRC and Santander make the case for discount retail as a global investment theme
At the 2026 Global Consumer & Retail Conference in Manhattan on October 8, DRC and Santander discussed how discount grocers are reshaping food retail worldwide, and why investors are paying attention.
The deal flow is clear. This year, Aldi Süd took a minority stake in Philippine hard discounter Dali, which has grown to more than 1,300 stores since 2020. In 2024, Mexico’s Tiendas 3B raised close to $600 million in its NYSE listing. Strategic investors and public markets are now backing the hard discount model in emerging markets.
Our message to the international audience of investors, bankers and (online)retailers: discount is a compelling opportunity, whether through greenfield entry or brownfield acquisition. But the winners are not decided by capital alone. They need a disciplined format, a tightly focused assortment, a private-label strategy and local sourcing that fits the market. Many regions remain largely untapped white spaces, so the window for well-prepared entrants is still open.
DRC Discount Retail Consulting supports investors and retailers from market screening and target identification to format design, sourcing and launch. If you are evaluating a discount investment or market entry, we would be glad to talk.
